Region Code

DVD copyright protection has set with two measures the region codes and copy protection.

Region code is to divide the world into six regions; the DVD-Video can only be played on local made players. Motion Picture Association of the United States insisted that the use of area codes to identify, mainly because every movie released at different times around the world, in order to avoid the film is not staged, DVD-Video was first listed on the interests of the loss caused by the film industry, they make the area code to be controlled so that DVD from other regions can not be played in the local region.

The detail of six regions is like below:
First Region (Region 1):
United States, Canada, the eastern Pacific islands
Second Region (Region 2):
Japan, Western Europe, Scandinavia, South Africa, the Middle East (including Egypt)
Third Region (Region 3):
Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries
Fourth Region (Region 4):
Australia, New Zealand, Central and South America, the South Pacific islands, Caribbean Sea
Fifth Region (Region 5):
Russia, Mongolia, the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Korea, North Africa, the Northwest sub-area, etc.
Sixth District (Region 6):
Mainland China

In addition, there are two special regions:
Seventh Region (Region 7): Reserved
Eighth Region (Region 8): Special international area(air lines, ships).

DVD forum requires that DVD discs and DVD players should set with region code, the DVD player can only play the correspondent discs in the same region. The region code protect the copy right and bring benefit to users. At present, only the eight film industry companies in America put on strict limitations to region code, DVD from others shall have no region limitations, so it is called free region code, this disc is called all region disc.
